Archive material and source history
Zouk is a music genre that came out of the French Antilles, mixing calypso rhythms with French Creole melodies. The band Zouk Machine helped bring that sound to a wider audience in the 1980s. Their song "Ce Soir Ou Jamais" became particularly well-known.
Zouk Machine formed in 1979 with members from Guadeloupe, including Jocelyne Labylle on vocals and Jacob Desvarieux on guitar. They put traditional Antillean music together with synthesizers and dance beats. Their album "Zouk Machine 2" came out in 1986.
After Labylle left in 2000, the group's lineup changed. Desvarieux died in 2021. Other songs by Zouk Machine include "Les Plus Belles Mélodies!" and "Lettre."
