Zounds formed in London in 1977, part of that city's punk scene. Their music had a raw, direct quality, with songs like 'Target/Mr. Disney/War' and 'Dirty Squatters' reflecting a sharp, often political edge. Steve Ignorant handled vocals, and the band's sound carried some reggae influence alongside its punk foundation.
They released albums including 'Can't Cheat Karma!' in 1977 and 'The Curse of Zounds' in 1979. The song 'Biafra' from their catalog became particularly noted, a sparse, haunting track that addressed the Nigerian Civil War. Other songs like 'Great White Hunter' and 'Little Bit More' filled out their recordings.
Zounds never broke through to mainstream popularity, but their work found an audience. The original lineup included Ignorant, guitarist Chris 'Boa' Locke, bassist Micky Donnelly, and drummer Steve 'Hobbo' Baker. Personnel changed over time, with Ignorant remaining the consistent presence.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
