Zozobra formed in San Diego in 2014 with Benjamin Murdoch on vocals and guitar, Brendan Radigan on guitar, Graham Burns on bass, and Jared Sutherland on drums. Their first album, 'Vessels,' came out in 2015, followed by 'A Distant Star Fades' in 2017. They've also released EPs like 'Harbinger' in 2019 and 'Elysian' in 2022.
Their music pulls from doom and black metal, with atmospheric layers that give it a heavy, expansive feel. Songs like 'In Jetstreams' and 'Silver Ghost' show how they build tension through slow, mournful melodies and sudden bursts of intensity. The lyrics often circle themes of loss and isolation, but the sound itself, thick with guitar textures and driving rhythms, carries most of the weight.
They've kept a steady pace of releases without much outside noise, letting the records speak for themselves. It's the kind of work that draws listeners who want something dense and immersive, not just loud.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
