Zp El Innovador formed in Medellín, Colombia in the late 1990s. The band's frontman Juan Pablo Villa, who went by Zp, wrote lyrics that often touched on social themes. Their 2006 single "Loca" became an international hit, with its danceable rhythm and lyrics about female empowerment connecting with listeners across Latin America.
Their music mixed reggaeton and hip-hop with Colombian rhythms. Songs like "TANTSY" and "Vuela (part. Harper MX)" showed their range within that style. The band faced criticism for some of their lyrics, which occasionally addressed political topics or drew accusations of promoting certain viewpoints.
They released albums including La Locura in 2007 and El Innovador in 2009. The lineup included Reykon on vocals, Alex El Tierno rapping, Pipe Calderon on guitar, Bella Alvarez on bass, and Tata on drums. Their work found an audience particularly among younger listeners who responded to their direct approach.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
