Zubia formed in Karachi in 1985 with Shahzad Hasan on guitar, Salman Ahmad on vocals, Humayun Khan on bass, and Arshad Mehmood on drums. They put out the album 'Yabadabadoooo' in 1988, and the title track became their calling card. The band's music drew from both eastern and western traditions, with Ahmad's voice at the front.
They released a few more albums in the early 1990s, like 'Yaad' and 'Wandering Soul'. Their sound sometimes got pushback from different corners for not fitting neatly into one box, and Ahmad's views on social issues occasionally drew attention. They kept playing and recording through that period.
Zubia stopped working as a band in 2006. The song 'Yabadabadoooo' is what most people remember them for.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
