Zuco 103 formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1999 around vocalist Lilian Vieira, saxophonist Marcelo Jeneci, bassist Jorge Continentino, percussionist Jarbas Barbosa, and drummer Branca Lisboa. Their debut album 'Outro Lado' came out in 2002 with the single 'Beija A Mim (saudade)', a song that caught attention with its blend of Brazilian feeling and contemporary arrangements.
They put out six albums between 2002 and 2015, including 'Zuco 103' in 2004 and 'Alma de Peso' in 2006. The lineup shifted over time, with Jeneci leaving in 2009 and Continentino departing later. Songs like 'Brasil 2000' and 'Electric Hill' show their mix of samba rhythms with jazz and electronic touches, which sometimes drew debate from traditionalists.
Their catalog includes tracks recorded in both Portuguese and English, like the dual versions of 'Brief Passions'. The music avoids easy categorization, working with saudade, that particular Portuguese-Brazilian sense of longing, while keeping the rhythms forward and open to experiment.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
