Zum (Rap) came together in São Paulo in the early 2000s, with rappers Rodrigo Brandão (MC Sapão), Bruno de Souza (MC Menor do Chapa), and DJ Paulinho (DJ Pinguim) at the core. They put out their first album, 'Só os Brutos Que São,' in 2002. The track 'Eu Respiro Isso' from that record caught on and became something of an anthem in Brazilian rap circles.
Their lyrics often dealt with life in the city and social issues, which sometimes got them into trouble with authorities. In 2005, MC Sapão was arrested after a show where he performed a song criticizing the police. They kept at it, releasing albums like 'De Volta para o Front' in 2004 and 'A Verdade Dói' in 2007.
Later records included 'Zé do Caroço' in 2010 and 'Zumzumzim' in 2015. The group's work was recognized with awards like the Prêmio Tim de Música Brasileira.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
