Archive material and source history
Zumbalanço Samba Rock formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1988, with Fernando "Nando" Cunha on vocals and percussion, Ronaldo Bastos on bass, Cláudio Jorge on guitar, and Zé Luis Cedraz on drums. Their first album came out the following year, featuring the song "Essa noite."
They mixed samba rhythms with rock and funk, which didn't sit well with some traditional samba listeners at the time. The band kept at it anyway, putting out records like "Samba Rock" in 1991 and "Sentimento" in 1995. By 2000 they had released "Samba Rock 2000," their eleventh studio album.
Their sound found an audience despite early resistance, and they kept playing and recording for years after forming. The music they made in the late eighties and nineties, including "Essa noite," is what people still talk about when their name comes up.
