Zumbi Holocausto formed in São Paulo, Brazil in 1985, drawing from the raw aggression of bands like Venom and Celtic Frost. Their early work in the Brazilian metal scene came during a time when that subculture faced considerable hostility from mainstream society.
Their 1986 album "The Curse of Zumbi" featured a cover depicting a crucified Jesus Christ, which brought accusations of blasphemy and Satanism. The band's lyrics regularly explored themes of violence, death, and the occult, sparking debate even within metal circles about whether they were glorifying darkness or simply exploring it.
They released several albums in quick succession, including "Shadows Over Transylvania" in 1987 and "From the Devil's Tomb" in 1988. Their 1989 album "Castle Freak" gave them what became their most well-known song of the same name, alongside other tracks like "Frankenstein" and "Night Of The Living Dead" that continued their horror-themed approach.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
