Archive material and source history
Zuri Akoko formed in Oakland, California in the late 1990s. The band's name comes from an African phrase meaning "beautiful light" or "shining star." Early members included singer-songwriter Tia Fuller, multi-instrumentalist Jesse Duldulao, and drummer Ubaka Hill.
Their 2003 debut album "Lunar Phases" received strong critical attention. The title track became something of an anthem for listeners drawn to its ethereal quality and themes of self-discovery.
Over time, the group faced some criticism about cultural appropriation for blending traditional African sounds with contemporary genres. They continued working through those conversations while maintaining their musical direction.
Later albums included "Celestial Tapestry" in 2006 and "Equinox" in 2009. The band's lineup expanded to include bassist Maya Jupiter in 2009 and guitarist Malik Nuri in 2013.
