Zuster Glimlach formed in Antwerp in the early 1980s around vocalist Max Piano, whose real name was Marcel Vanthilt. They started with keyboardist Luc Van Acker and guitarist Michel De Ruyter. Their name came from the Mona Lisa's smile, which they thought captured something about bringing both joy and thoughtful ideas into their music.
Their 1986 song "Dominiek" became a classic in Flemish pop, with a melody that stuck with people and lyrics that felt honest about love and loss. They also had songs like "Tussen al die sterren" that kept them on radio playlists through the late 1980s.
Max Piano's stage presence and lyrics sometimes stirred things up, like when their 1988 single "Een Ster" led to conversations about the monarchy. The band kept going with different lineups until they stopped in 1992, about ten years after they started.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
