Archive material and source history
Zuza Zapata grew up in Salvador, Brazil, with parents who were both artists and activists. Her father was the novelist Jorge Amado, and her mother was the painter and writer Zélia Gattai. She started singing in the 1970s with the group Novos Baianos before going solo.
Her 1976 album 'Carnaval de Luto' included a title track about the assassination of political activist Carlos Marighella. She kept writing songs like 'Meu Amor, Meu Abrigo' and 'A Paz' that addressed social issues.
Later, her sound incorporated more Afro-Brazilian folklore and experimental jazz. She worked with artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. Albums such as 'Mar Azul' and 'Bossa Negra' show this shift, though she never stopped writing about the themes that first defined her work.
