Zuzuca was a Brazilian band from Salvador, Bahia, led by singer and songwriter Zuzuca Sampaio. Their music drew from Afro-Brazilian traditions like candomblé and samba, but blended them with contemporary sounds. This approach sometimes drew criticism from purists who questioned how traditional their fusion really was.
Their most recognized song is "Batuque do Morro Velho," which became something of an anthem in Salvador. Other tracks like "Boi Cara Preta" and "Carioca da Gema" show the same mix of rhythmic drive and melodic warmth. The band's debut album was called "Água de Chuva (Rainwater)."
Beyond Sampaio, the group included musicians like Adelino Carneiro on percussion, Kiko Dinorá and Fernandinho do Violão on guitars, Manno Góes on bass, and Hermes de Luna on drums. They released several albums, including "Minha Alma É Um Beija-Flor (My Soul is a Hummingbird)" and "Samba de Coco (Coconut Samba)."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
