Archive material and source history
ZZ formed in Houston, Texas in the late 1960s with Billy Gibbons on guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill on bass and vocals, and Frank Beard on drums. They released their debut album 'ZZ Top's First Album' in 1971. Their sound had a bluesy grit and Southern feel that came through on songs like 'A to Z' and 'Be Survivor'.
In 1979, Dusty Hill died from heart failure. The band continued with Billy F. Gibbons joining on bass. They kept recording through the decades, putting out albums like 'Tres Hombres' in 1973, 'Fandango!' in 1975, and 'Eliminator' in 1983. Songs like 'Bye-Bye My Girl' and 'Dang Dang' showed their mix of rock grooves and blues roots.
ZZ's lineup stayed mostly the same for years with Gibbons, Hill, and Beard. They played shows with other musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and B.B. King. Later albums included 'Antenna' in 1994 and 'La Futura' in 2012.
