His music often had a light, humorous touch with songs like "Boter Op Het Hoofd" and "Dat Soort Meisjes." He worked with groups like the Metropole Orchestra at times. Some of his lyrics drew criticism, including accusations about drug references in the 1980s, but he kept writing and performing.
Staartjes received the Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion for his cultural work. His band included musicians such as Erwin Van Ligten on guitar and Jan Vlug on bass. He died in 2020, but songs like "De Eindeloze Scheldpartij" and "Ballade Van De Roversbende" still get played on Dutch radio and in schools.
