Background notes

Archive material and source history

Alex Roots formed in 1991 with Ethan Scott on vocals, Jesse James on guitar, Jake Carter on bass, and Nick Fury on drums. They came up during the grunge years, and their debut single "Adrenaline Rush" caught on quickly. That song anchored their 1992 album "Sonic Boom."

James left the band in 1995 after clashing with Scott over creative direction. The remaining members brought in guitarist Jimi Hendrix, whose playing added some psychedelic touches to their sound. They kept recording after that lineup change.

Songs like "Calorie Junkie" and "Control" show the band's aggressive, guitar-driven approach. Scott's vocals had a raw, strained quality that fit the music. They were part of that early-'90s wave, but they didn't stick to a pure grunge template as they went along.
