Arcturus formed in Oslo in 1991, with Steinar Sverd Johnsen and vocalist Kristoffer Rygg at the start. Their early work had a black metal foundation, but with keyboards and Rygg's vocals giving it an atmospheric quality. Their debut album 'Aspera Hiems Symfonia' came out in 1995.
By the late 1990s, their sound had shifted toward something more progressive and experimental. Rygg left the band in 1997, and Simen Hestnæs took over on vocals. Songs like 'Ad Astra' and 'Crashland' show the kind of ambitious, layered arrangements they were working with during this period.
They kept recording and touring through the 2000s, with albums that mixed metal with elements from outside the genre. Tracks such as 'Whence & Whither Goest The Wind' and 'My Angel' reflect that ongoing blend of heavy instrumentation and melodic, sometimes theatrical, vocal delivery.
