Toen zag ik ver van daar een jong soldaat op wacht
Een kind nog haast, wanhopig en verlaten
Ver van zijn moeder, tot hij in de koude nacht
Haar stem, die zacht zijn naam riep, dacht te horen
In een gezicht verscheen zijn moeder daar aan hem
Zo stralend, heel dicht bij, maar toch van verre
Hij kon niet spreken en de wind verwoei zijn stem
Ze zag er jonger uit en droeg een krans van sterren
Zij streelde zacht zijn jonge nek en blonde haar
Bood hem haar borsten en nam hem in haar armen
En toen pas wist hij wie zij was, herkende haar
Die hem in duisternis en dood daar kwam verwarmen
Het was zo lief, zoals hij bij haar lag
Zij, de glorierijke, onbevlekt ontvangen
Totdat het gloren van de ongeboren dag
Een zachte blos gaf aan zijn bleke dode wangen
