Editor's note

BoA, the South Korean singer who crossed borders early.

From a 2000 debut to Japanese hits, she built a catalog of pop and R&B across languages.

For a sense of her range, try 'Every Heart (english Version)' and 'Show Me What You Got'. They capture the mix of ballads and upbeat tracks she's known for.

BoA was the first Korean artist to release a Japanese album, with tracks like 'Valenti (coreano)' showing her bilingual reach. Her music blends pop, R&B, and dance, often touching on love and self-discovery. She's faced criticism but kept recording, with over 470 songs in her catalog.

Discovered at 13 by SM Entertainment, she debuted in 2000 with 'ID; Peace B'. By 2002, she was hitting in Japan with 'Listen to My Heart', and later songs like 'Dakishimeru' and 'Jewel Song' expanded her sound. Controversies in 2015 didn't stop her from performing and recording.

BoA was born Kwon Boa in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea in 1986. SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man discovered her when she was 13, and she released her debut single 'ID; Peace B' in 2000. Her early album 'No. 1' established her as a promising young artist in South Korea.

In 2002, she became the first Korean artist to release a Japanese album. Her single 'Listen to My Heart' was a hit in Japan. She has released music in both Korean and Japanese since then, with songs like 'Every Heart' and 'Hurricane Venus' among her work.

Her music includes pop, R&B, dance, and ballads. She has collaborated with other artists, including Chancellor on 'Always, All Ways'. Other songs like 'Eat You Up', 'Better', and 'Jewel Song' show the range of her catalog.

BoA has also worked as an actress.
