Editor's note

Brainstorm's layered harmonies and thoughtful lyrics

The Latvian band that mixed pop, rock, and folk since forming in Riga in 1989.

For a good sense of their sound, start with 'We Are.' and 'Bring You Down'. Those tracks give you the layered harmonies and the thoughtful lyrics that run through their work.

Brainstorm's sound has always been defined by that mix of pop, rock, and folk with layered harmonies. Songs like 'We Are.' and 'Bring You Down' show how they built that identity, even as some critics questioned their choice to write in English instead of Latvian. They've also worked with groups like the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, which adds another dimension to their recordings.

They started as Brainstorm Orchestra in Riga in 1989, with Renars Kaupers on vocals and guitar. Their first album 'Vēl nav par vēlu' came out in 1993, followed by 'Veronika' the next year. They kept releasing albums through the 2000s, including 'Online' and 'Four Shores'.

Brainstorm formed in Riga in 1989, originally called Brainstorm Orchestra. The four members were Renars Kaupers on vocals and guitar, Jānis Jubalts on drums, Gundars Mauševics on guitar and vocals, and Ingars Viļums on bass. Their first album, 'Vēl nav par vēlu,' came out in 1993, followed by 'Veronika' the next year.

That song, along with others like 'Welcome To The Darkside' and 'The World To See,' helped define their sound, which mixed pop, rock, and folk with layered harmonies and thoughtful lyrics. They kept releasing albums through the 2000s, including 'Online' and 'Four Shores.'

At one point, some critics questioned their use of English lyrics instead of Latvian. The band has worked with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, among others.
