Hij leefde bij z'n boeken en z'n etsen
Z'n porcelein, z'n ikats, z'n antiek
En 's avonds stond z'n radio op Holland
Dan werd hij meestal dood-melancholiek
Hij had gereisd in vele vreemde landen

Met al z'n eigen dingen om zich heen
Niet in een stad, maar ergens bij een dorpje
En zonder buren, liefst maar heel alleen
Zo bouwde hij dat eigen huis in Holland
Hij had het ingedeeld, gemeubileerd
Hij zag het aan een stille landweg liggen
Waar heel de dag geen sterveling passeert
En toen... toen is hij plotseling gestorven
En heel de kotta schrok er 's ochtends van:
Maar 's avonds lag hij, stil en in z'n eentje
Onder wat bloemen... in memoriam
Een verre neef krijgt nu z'n spaarbankboekje
En al de mooie dingen bij hem thuis
Geen mens zal na een maand nog aan hem denken
En ergens, ginds, in Holland staat een huis
