Zich al tot bloem en vruchten had gezet
Dat nu vernield is en dat nooit zal bloeien
Het afgerukte, stuk getrapte blad
Van 't groene stekje dat tot boom zou groeien
Langs overal hetzelfde kampongpad
Daar is zoveel, waaraan wij telkens denken
Als ginds de dag weer in de avond vloeitt
En op een ladang in de verre goenoeng
Het eerste vuurtje door de schemer gloeit
Wij zijn geweest... zoals de dag geweest is
Maar morgen keert die dag weer met de zon
Waarin de blonde rijst zal rijpen in de aren
