I never was good at goodbye

I couldn't stand to see her cry

Cody stood behind me like a stone

While she said goodbye to the last of the red rock riders

We followed tracks down through the canyon

To two lame horses they'd abandoned

The river shinin' 'neath that ghost-white Texas moon

I could feel the gunfight

Knew it was comin' soon

Cody fell when I looked back
