Café Com Bobagem

Café Com Bobagem formed in 1988 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, with Zé Renato on vocals, Renato Rocha on guitar, Sérgio Dumont on bass, and Marcelo Sussekind on drums. Their name translates to 'Coffee with Nonsense,' which gives you a sense of their approach. They released their self-titled debut album in 1993, and it included the hit 'Morrer de Rir (El Arbi),' a satirical take on consumerism that became something of an anthem for them.

Their music pulled from Brazilian traditions like samba and bossa nova, but with pop and rock elements mixed in. Songs like 'Adão e Erva' and 'Funk da Feira' had upbeat rhythms and lyrics that could be both humorous and pointed. They weren't afraid of social commentary, and that sometimes drew criticism from officials and reviewers who found their language or references too sharp.

Over time, the lineup shifted a bit, with musicians like Gabriel Thomaz and Samuel Rosa joining on guitar. They put out six studio albums through 2004, including 'Bota pra Ferver' in 1995 and 'O Grande Circo Maldito' in 2002. The band dissolved in 2007, but tracks like 'Rap da Roça' and 'Salsa do Japonês' still pop up in playlists and remind people of their particular blend of wit and rhythm.
