Carrapeta formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1996 with members Pedro Henrique "Pepeu" Gomes on vocals, Igor Guerra on cavaquinho, Daniel Montes on tan-tan, and Leandro Santos on surdo. Their debut album came out in 2002 and included "O Baile do Zé," which became a staple at parties and carnivals across Brazil.
While their energetic take on samba gained them a following, some critics felt their approach was too commercial and strayed from traditional roots. In 2005, they had a public dispute with samba musician Zeca Pagodinho over song usage, which sparked conversations about artistic boundaries.
Their catalog includes songs like "Pimenta No Salão," "Agora É Eu," and "Carta pra Quinô," showing their range within the samba framework without dramatic claims about evolution or legacy.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
