Sie dachten dem Blut und dem Kampfe,
der Kraft und der Ehre, dem Mut,
sie dachten seiner Augen voll Feuer
und voll der jugendlichen Glut.
Er hörte die Lügen des Kreuzes wohl,
doch nie hat er ihnen geglaubt.
In Treue stand er nur zu Wotan allein,
vor ihm nur senkte er sein Haupt;
denn er war ein Diener der Asen
und für sie zu kämpfen bereit,
er trug Donar´s Hammer voll Würde und Stolz,
wie schon seine Vorfahr´n vor langer Zeit...
Die letzte Schlacht war für ihn geschlagen,
man bettete ihn auf sein Boot,
die Streitaxt noch fest in den Händen
und edel noch bis in den Tod.
Die Wölfe zerbissen die Taue,
in Flammen trieb er auf das Meer
und der letzte Erbe der Raben
betrat Walhalla´s Heldenheer.
Denn er war ein Diener der Asen
und für sie zu kämpfen bereit,
er trug Donar´s Hammer voll Würde und Stolz,
wie schon seine Vorfahr´n vor langer Zeit...
