Catulo da Paixão Cearense was born in 1863 in the northeastern state of Ceará. At sixteen, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and spent time in the city's bohemian bars and theaters, absorbing the music around him.
In 1899, he composed 'A Flor do Maracujá,' which became widely popular.
He wrote in a style that mixed traditional Brazilian rhythms with European harmonies. His work has been covered by many artists since.
