The Chad Mitchell Trio formed in 1959 with Chad Mitchell, Mike Kobluk, and John Denver, who would later become famous on his own. They were a folk group known for their vocal harmonies and sometimes sharp lyrics. Their version of the traditional song 'Lizzie Borden' became one of their best-known recordings.
They released their first album in 1961, which included 'Lizzie Borden.' The trio put out several more albums through the 1960s, with songs like 'Your Friendly, Liberal, Neighborhood Klu Klux Klan' and 'Barry's Boys' showing their tendency toward topical and satirical material. John Denver left after their third album to start his solo career.
By the time they stopped recording regularly, they had released about a dozen albums. Their 1975 album was called 'Reunion.' The group's sound relied on close harmonies and often dealt with social or political themes, a common approach in the folk scene of that era.
