Dana Dane

Dana Dane came up in Brooklyn during hip-hop's early days, when the sound was still being worked out in park jams and house parties. He put out his first album, 'Dana Dane with Fame,' in 1986. The track 'Bedie Boo' from that record got a lot of play on radio and in clubs, with a rhythm that stuck in your head.

His lyrics could be sharp and sometimes drew criticism for how they handled certain subjects, but he generally kept to his own approach. Other songs like 'Cinderfella' and 'Delancey Street' showed his ear for storytelling and character. He worked with people like DJ Fame and producer Big Scoop to build out his records.

After that initial run, he kept putting out albums here and there into the 2000s, like 'The Phoenix Project' in 2006. He didn't dominate the charts for decades, but for a stretch in the late '80s, if you were listening to hip-hop, you probably heard 'Bedie Boo.'
