Flaviane Montenegro was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1962. In the early 1980s, she formed a band with guitarist Renato Piau and bassist Alberto Continentino. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1983, and its track 'Nada Mais Que Hoje' became something of an anthem, capturing a certain mood about living in the present.
Her music often explored subjects that made some listeners uncomfortable, which led to public criticism from conservative groups. In 1993, she was arrested for drug possession, an event that drew heavy media attention. She later used her platform to talk about drug decriminalization and mental health.
She has released more than a dozen albums over time, including 'Estrela do Mar' in 1990 and 'Respirar' in 1998. Songs like 'Quero Você Como Minha Mãe' and 'Deus de Verdade' show the range in her work, which touches on samba, bossa nova, and rock. The band's lineup has included musicians like César Mendes on drums and Pedro Baby on keyboards.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
