Flora MacNeil was a band from Nova Scotia that formed in 1991, taking their name from their family's roots on the Isle of Barra in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The group consisted of three sisters and a cousin, with Flora herself handling vocals, fiddle, and whistle. Their debut album "Tàladh nan Cruachan" came out in 1994, followed by "Teireadh" in 1997 and a self-titled release in 2001.
Their music worked with traditional Gaelic material, including songs like "A Bhradag Dhubh" and "A Mhairead Og." The 2005 album "A Bhradag Dhubh" featured the title track, which became one of their better-known pieces. They performed with other folk acts like Cherish the Ladies and Mary Black.
Later albums included "The Other Side" in 2009, "Fire & Grace" in 2012, and "Sirens" in 2015. The band's lineup featured Chrissy MacNeil on vocals, guitar, and banjo; Lucy MacNeil on vocals, accordion, and bodhrán; and Mairead MacNeil on vocals, flute, and whistle.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
