Harper Simon was a band active in the early 1970s, with the singer and guitarist Harper Simon at its center alongside Maria Thomas on violin, John Ellis on bass, and David Lee on drums. They put out three albums between 1971 and 1975, starting with a self-titled record that included the song 'Cactus Flower Rag.'
That track, 'Cactus Flower Rag,' became their most recognizable piece. It's a gentle, folk-tinged tune that has lingered in certain circles long after the band stopped recording. Their other work includes songs like 'Wishes And Stars' and 'Tennessee,' which carried a similar, quiet atmosphere.
The group's later albums, 'The Water's Edge' and 'Time's Tapestry,' suggested a shift toward more experimental sounds, but they never reached the same level of attention as their first record. The band's original lineup dissolved after 1975, and while there were stories about personal difficulties and legal issues, their music is mostly remembered for its specific, hushed quality rather than any grand narrative.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
