I-20 came out of New Orleans in the mid-2000s with a sound that mixed rhythm and blues, soul, and funk. Their debut album arrived in 2006, followed by records like 'The Real Deal' in 2008 and 'Tribes of New Orleans' in 2011. The band was led by frontman James Andrews, with Justin Patton on guitar, Derrick Williams on bass, and Christopher Johnson on drums.
In 2009, they released 'Tyson,' a single that became their biggest hit. The song's title referenced boxer Mike Tyson, and its rhythm connected with listeners. Other tracks in their catalog include 'Cocaine,' 'Sleepin' On Me,' and 'Fightin' In The Club.'
Around 2010, the group dealt with a legal dispute over ownership of their music. Their music stayed rooted in that New Orleans blend, carried by Andrews's vocals and the band's groove.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
