Editor's note

Ian Gillan Band, after Deep Purple

A short-lived but restless project that let Ian Gillan stretch out in the late 1970s.

For a sense of their range, try 'Scarabus' and 'If I Sing Softly'. They're not what you'd expect from the guy who sang 'Smoke on the Water'.

It was the first thing Gillan did after leaving Deep Purple, and the band's sound kept shifting. The debut was called 'Child in Time', and later albums like 'Clear Air Turbulence' went more progressive. Songs like 'Time and Again' show they weren't just rehashing old riffs.

They formed in 1976 with guitarist Bernie Tormé and put out 'Child in Time' that year. After Tormé left in 1978, the sound changed again, leading to albums like 'Mr. Universe' and 'Future Shock'. The lineup kept shifting until the band wound down in the early 1980s.

The Ian Gillan Band formed in 1976 after Ian Gillan left Deep Purple, with guitarist Bernie Tormé, bassist John McCoy, and drummer Mick Underwood. Their debut album 'Child in Time' came out that same year. They followed it with 'Clear Air Turbulence' in 1977, which leaned into more progressive territory, and then 'Scarabus' later that same year.

Tormé left in 1978, and the band's sound shifted again. They put out 'Mr. Universe' in 1979 and 'Future Shock' in 1980. Songs like 'Time and Again' and 'Gut Reaction' show the band's range across those albums, moving between hard rock and more experimental textures.

By the early 1980s, the lineup had changed considerably, with musicians like keyboardist Colin Towns and guitarist Ray Fenwick coming in. The band didn't last much longer, but it gave Gillan a space to work outside the shadow of his previous group.
