IQ formed in 1980, evolving from an earlier group called The Lens that had been active since 1975. Their debut album 'Tales from the Lush Attic' arrived that same year, establishing their place in what was being called the new wave of British progressive rock. The band's early lineup included Peter Nicholls on vocals, Mike Holmes on guitars, and Paul Cook on drums.
In 1985, IQ released 'The Wake,' a concept album that explored existential themes through the band's characteristically intricate arrangements. Songs like 'Born Billiant' and 'Guilding Light' demonstrate their approach to progressive rock, with layered instrumentation and narrative lyrics. The band's sound drew clear inspiration from Genesis, Yes, and Pink Floyd, though they developed their own identity within that tradition.
By the late 1980s, IQ experienced significant lineup changes, including Nicholls' departure. The band continued recording and performing through the 1990s, though with less visibility than during their initial period. They reunited with Nicholls in the early 2000s as interest in progressive rock saw a resurgence, leading to new albums like 'Frequency' in 2009.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
