Klokke vier wekte ons de stuurman met zijn
kreet: "alle hens aan dek!" 't Was de wacht
geweest in het vooronder die ontdekt had:
"boots, we varen lek..." Verloren leek ons
schip, gevangen op een klip.
Onze "Hoop" maakte steeds meer water, de
vraag was enkel nog wanneer ze kapseizen
zou. De kleine scheepsjongen bad stilletjes
tot Jezus, of die voor zijn oude moeder
zorgen wou. Verloren was ons schip, gevangen op een klip.
De kapitein vocht op de plecht, maar recht
kreeg zelfs hij het roer niet. Het schip
brak, toen kantelde de ra. Sloeg twee man
overboord,
Ik werd wakker in een sloep naast de
bootsman. Ik greep zijn hand maar die was
al koud. Met proviand voor twee, drie weken
en een maand ver uit de kust, weet ik:
een jongen op de vaart, wordt zelden oud.
Aan de einder blinkt een stip: de resten
van ons schip.
