João Villaret

João Villaret was born in Lisbon in 1953 and grew up in the Alfama district, an area known for its connection to fado. He started with a more traditional approach, releasing his debut album 'Fado' in 1975. Things shifted in 1983 with the album 'Fado Falado,' which gave its name to the style he became known for, mixing fado melodies with spoken-word poetry. Songs like 'Fado Falado' and 'O Poeta é Um Fingidor' show how he recited poetry with a raw, emotional delivery rather than singing it straight.

His approach wasn't universally embraced. Some fado purists questioned whether spoken word belonged in the tradition, while others felt he brought something fresh to it. Villaret kept working in that vein anyway, putting out albums like 'Canções de Amor e Mar' in 1988 and 'Alma Lusitana' in 1995. He also spent time as a member of the Portuguese band Os Azeitonas, known for their lighter, humorous songs, which gave him a different outlet in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Villaret's recordings, including live albums like 'Fado ao Vivo' from 1998, document a performer who worked within fado's emotional world but often let the words themselves carry the weight. Tracks such as '4 Odes de Ricardo Reis' and 'O Menino de Sua Mãe' reflect that focus on poetry and spoken delivery, leaving behind a body of work that feels specific to his particular corner of Portuguese music.
