John Scott Cree came up in the post-punk scene of the early 1980s with a band that included Kevin Evans on bass, Paul Tillman on drums, and David Pearce. Their first album, 'The Emperor's New Clothes,' came out in 1983. The sound was raw and atmospheric enough to find a cult audience, though some critics found it too morose.
In 1986 they put out 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles,' which had the single 'A Superfluous Man.' That song, along with others like 'Ay de oh ho' and 'Days like these,' captured a particular kind of alienation that resonated with listeners.
