Gaan een man en vrouw gelaten, zij verwacht haar eerste kind
Door hun oude, dunne kleren priemt de winter vol venijn
En een kerkklok laat zich horen
Het zal spoedig Kerstmis zijn
In de verte schijnt een lichtje, 't zijn de lampen van een kroeg
Bij de vrouw meldt zich het wichtje, heeft zij nog wel tijd genoeg
Ach, wat moet de man beginnen, bij z'n vrouw begint de pijn
En vol schroom gaan zij naar binnen
Het zal spoedig Kerstmis zijn
Doch de waard zegt wat humeurig: "Man, ik heb hier geen hotel
Zomaar om een bed te vragen, God, wat denken jullie wel?"
Maar dan kijkt hij naar 't vrouwtje, vindt zichzelf dan niet zo fijn
Denkt: Ik zal haar moeten helpen

Op wat lompen in een schuurtje, haast te slecht nog voor een dier
Ligt een pasgeboren kindje, in de stank van rum en bier
Plotseling luiden alle klokken, en de waard geeft brood en wijn
