Kathy Mar grew up in Los Angeles with jazz, classical, and folk music around the house. She studied at Berklee College of Music, where she worked on her voice and songwriting. Her 2015 single "White Water" got attention for its falsetto and lyrics, and it led to her first album, "The Balcony," the next year.
She often works with guitarist and producer Seth Earnest, and their band includes bassist Nick Rowe and drummer Ross Garren. They've made a few albums together, like "Nowhere, California" in 2018 and "Samsara" in 2021. Some of her other songs include "Bamboo Wind," "Barbie Cues," and "Basilisk."
Mar has talked publicly about dealing with mental health issues, and that openness has connected with some listeners. She's also sung with Dave Matthews Band, The Head and the Heart, and Ben Folds on occasion.
