Archive material and source history
Kelly formed in North Carolina in 1991 with Dave Hurst on vocals and guitar, Charles Hines on guitar, and Ethan Eubanks on drums. Their early single "Shoes" got some attention, and their second album, "One Word More," included songs like "Songbird" and "As Long as You're There." That record did well enough to go platinum.
Later songs like "Where Do You Think You're Going In That?" and "Text Message Breakup" show the band's interest in everyday moments and conversational lyrics. They put out a third album called "Candy" in 1995, but by the end of the decade, Hurst was dealing with substance abuse issues that eventually led to a break in the band's activity.
