Kevin Gilbert was born in Chicago in 1966. His father was an opera singer and his mother a classical pianist, which gave him an early grounding in music. He played keyboards and wrote songs that drew from jazz, rock, and classical influences.
In the early 1980s he was part of the progressive rock band Toy Matinee, which included members like Fred Maher on drums and Mitch Easter on guitar. The band didn't find much commercial success, and Gilbert left in 1987. He went on to release solo albums including 'The Shaming of the True' in 1988 and 'Thud' in 1995.
In 1994 he put out 'A Long Day's Life,' an album whose title track became his most recognized song. Other tracks from that period include 'All Fall Down,' 'Childhood's End,' and 'Fun.' Gilbert died in 1996.
