La Esterella formed in Barcelona in 1995, with Mariona Aupí, Carles Cases, and Xavier Rota at the center. Their music drew from Catalan folk traditions, though they avoided being strictly traditional. Their debut album came out that same year, simply titled "La Esterella."
They released "Maria's Kind" in 2000, which included the song of the same name. Other tracks from their catalog include "Alle Moeders," "Bij Het Open Vuur," and "Carnaval In Madrid." Their lyrics sometimes addressed social themes, which occasionally drew attention beyond the music itself.
In 2005, they put out an album called "Universal." The group's work remained rooted in the regional sounds they started with, even as their audience grew.
