Lillasyster formed in 1996 in Gävle, Sweden, with Martin Westerstrand on vocals and guitar, Andreas Wilson on guitar, Stefan Bergström on bass, and Ulf Ivarsson on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1998, and they followed it with 'Det är inte lätt att vara människa' in 2001. That second album included 'Paraply' ('Umbrella'), which became their most recognizable song.
'Umbrella' had a haunting melody and lyrics that touched on the difficulties of being human, and it crossed over to audiences who didn't speak Swedish. The band's other songs, like 'Andreas' and 'Barn Utan Ben', kept to that mix of pop-rock catchiness and introspective writing.
In 2003, during a concert in Stockholm, Lillasyster displayed a banner with the word 'fuck' on it, which caused some outrage among conservative groups.
