Editor's note

Marvelous 3, the band behind 99 Red Balloons

A West German group whose 1989 hit defined a moment of pop melancholy.

For a quick sense of them, '99 Red Balloons' is the obvious one, but 'Fastboat' holds up too. Both have that slightly off-kilter pop thing they did well.

Marvelous 3 mattered because '99 Red Balloons' landed everywhere in 1989, topping charts in over thirty countries. That song's mix of a catchy tune and lyrics about feeling out of place gave their pop a different weight. You can hear a similar tension in later tracks like 'Fastboat' from their top songs list.

They started in West Germany in 1980 and put out 'Wonderland' in 1988. 'Nineteen Eighty Nine' broke them wide with '99 Red Balloons', and they kept going through 'The View from Here' and 'Surge' before calling it quits in 1994.

Marvelous 3 formed in West Germany in 1980 with Peter Freudenthaler on vocals, H.P. Baxxter on drums, and Mick Schlenkhoff on bass. They released their debut album 'Wonderland' in 1988, but it was their 1989 follow-up 'Nineteen Eighty Nine' that brought them international attention.

Their song '99 Red Balloons' became a global hit, reaching number one in over thirty countries. The track's melancholic melody and lyrics about alienation stood out from much of the pop music at the time.

After releasing two more albums, 'The View from Here' in 1991 and 'Surge' in 1993, the band disbanded in 1994. Their other songs included 'Fastboat' and 'Until You See'.
