Editor's note

Nickelback, the band everyone argued about

A Canadian rock group that sold millions while critics called them formulaic.

If you want the Nickelback sound, start with How You Remind Me and Photograph. They pretty much define the whole thing.

They broke through with Silver Side Up in 2001, anchored by How You Remind Me. That song became a radio staple, and later tracks like Photograph followed a similar blueprint of big choruses and straightforward rock. Even a lawsuit over the Photograph riff didn't slow them down.

They started playing local bars in Alberta in 1995. After How You Remind Me hit, they kept putting out albums like Dark Horse and Feed the Machine with the same core lineup.

Nickelback formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta, playing local bars before their third album Silver Side Up broke through in 2001. That record included How You Remind Me, which became their signature hit and pushed them to international attention. Their sound leaned on straightforward rock structures and big choruses, with songs like Photograph and Savin' Me following similar patterns.

Despite selling millions of records, the band drew consistent criticism from rock critics and some listeners who found their music formulaic. In 2005, the family of Chicago guitarist Terry Kath sued over the riff in Photograph, claiming it was lifted from one of his compositions; the case settled out of court.

They kept releasing albums anyway, putting out records like Dark Horse in 2008 and Feed the Machine in 2017. The lineup has stayed mostly stable with Chad Kroeger on vocals and guitar, Ryan Peake on guitar, Mike Kroeger on bass, and Daniel Adair on drums.
