Pansy Division formed in San Francisco in 1991, with Jon Ginoli on vocals and guitar, Chris Freeman on bass, and Patrick Manley on drums. They played punk music that was openly, unapologetically gay at a time when that was rare in the scene. Songs like 'I'm Gonna Be A Slut' and 'Homo Christmas' were funny, direct, and political, dealing with themes of sexuality and AIDS.
Their 1994 album 'Pile Up' got some attention, and they became a central part of what was called the queercore movement. The lineup changed over time, with Ginoli as the constant member. They put out records like 'Cheesy Does It' in 1996 and 'Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder' in 2003, mixing punk with pop melodies and folk storytelling, as on 'A Song Of Remembrance For Old Boyfriends'.
They stopped playing around 2007 but came back for some shows in 2016. Their music, blunt and celebratory in equal measure, offered a specific voice in punk that resonated with a lot of listeners who hadn't seen themselves reflected there before.
