(Décimas escritas en Santiago, el 19 de septiembre de 1973 a sólo cuatro días del asesinato de Víctor Jara. La versión citada aparece en el disco "Sólo digo compañeros" que Hugo Arévalo y Charo Cofré grabaran en Italia en 1974)
Desde que se agrupó el canto
en el fondo de la boca
desde que el pecho coloca
sus clamores como un manto;
el tirano siente espanto,
el pobre siente alegría,
cuando la voz desafía
a aquel que la desafiara:
por cantar fue Víctor Jara
fusilado a sangre fría.
Los que rompieron su pecho
salpicando allí amapolas
no saben que el canto es ola
que vuela sobre los techos.
Podrán acallarla un trecho,
podrán mancharle la cara,
pero el brazo que dispara
no puede contra el que canta:
por sellarle la garganta
mataron a Víctor Jara.
Sin cuerpo nace el juglar,
nace de voz solamente,
y el sátrapa inclemente*
cuando lo escucha cantar
busca en su cuerpo cortar
la raíz que el canto asile;
su boca volcanes miles,
sus manos montañas raras:
y al matar a Víctor Jara
llenaron de Jara a Chile.
Un canario ensangrentado,
un gorrión de huesos rotos,
un zorzal sin alboroto
fue su cuerpo acribillado.
De sus dedos cercenados,**
de su boca destruida
se escapó la voz herida
y se echó a volar al mundo
y ahora canta tan profundo
Víctor Jara ya sin vida.
