Quadrilha formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1985 with José Carlos Saldanha on vocals and guitar, Mauro Haro on guitar, Renato Cordeiro on bass, and Paulinho Abreu on drums. They worked within the city's indie rock scene, recording and releasing music despite financial limitations.
In 1993, the band released the album "Nem Mal Que Sempre Dure Nem Bem Que Nunca Se Acabe," which brought them wider recognition. Saldanha's lyrics often dealt with themes of pain and loss, which connected with listeners but also drew some criticism for being too dark. Songs like "Quem anda ao mar" and "O Melhor das Marés" came from this period.
Saldanha left the band in 2002, and the remaining members continued with Haro and Cordeiro taking on more songwriting responsibilities. They've released several albums since, including "Matéria Prima" in 2002 and "Último Romance" in 2009. The current lineup includes Haro, Cordeiro, Ricardo Pavan on vocals and guitar, and Andrio Assis on drums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
