Kon ie de mooiste appelen koppen die de groentewinkel had
Heel voorzichtig sloop toen Jantje met zijn bal de kamer uit
Toen ie na 'n kwartier terug kwam had ie 'n mandje vol met fruit
"Moedertje! Kijk nu eens even, kijk mij nu eens even aan!"
Maar 't bleef stil - z'n moeder keek niet... rustig was ze heengegaan

In het huis van kleine Jantje hingen de gordijnen neer
Zwarte mannen, naar en somber, liepen haastig heen en weer
En er kwam een zwarte wagen en er kwam een zwarte kist
Eind'lijk kwam ook kleine Jantje, van wiens offer niemand wist
En buiten stonden z'n makkertjes heel ernstig en droef bij elkaar
En namen netjes de petjes af voor Jantje z'n moeder d'r baar
